Lancaster Jazz Jam was established in 2017, emerging out of the Orbit Jazz Workshop at Lancaster Community Music Centre. Our aim is to present an inclusive jam session that allows players of all abilities to have an opportunity to play, gain confidence, learn about jazz music, develop performance skills and hear other musicians. At the jam we have a selection of tunes/standards to play and there is music available for C, Bb, Eb and Bass. You can choose which tunes you wish to play on and sign up to be part of the band when those tunes are called. The emphasis is on having fun, supporting each other and enjoying the music. The event is free and non-players are very welcome to come along too. Jack Pearce Quintet post-gig post

 

 

 

It was a total pleasure to welcome the Jack Pearce Quintet to Lancaster Jazz Scene on Sunday night for what proved to be a sensational gig.

Honest, energetic and authentic jazz musicianship presented with warmth and style.

Jack's rich, lyrical, soulful playing was a joy and his original compositions were evocative and expressive, whether taking us to an Italian Village (Ferrara) or the wrong way down country lanes (The Scenic Route).  His gentle steerage of the band gave each voice a chance to be heard whilst presenting a cohesive, effective force, coupled with the group's astonishing control and ability to respect the space.

Whether offering rolling, expansive textures such as in My Favourite Things or exploring playful tempo and rhythm (Remembrance) the band was always unified and creative, reaping the rewards that come from playing live together regularly.

Dan Sanderson demonstrated skill and dexterity on bass, his delicate and solid playing often interweaving with the plaintive and searing guitar of Sam Hughes, such as in the multi-textured Norwegian Wood.

As in Church Lane, Jascha Bingham's precise, inventive and melodic piano provided intense lift throughout whilst Angus Haygarth on drums was sensitive, instinctual and responsive, holding the band with care and attention. 

There was never a dull moment in this deeply satisfying gig, the hugely attentive audience were absorbed and engaged from the outset. The band were a pleasure to spend time with both on and off the stage and we wish them all the best for their ongoing tour.

Gregson Gig Series #12: Iles, Chisnall, Walker on the 23rd March

These three artists have played together in various settings over decades and represent jazz musicianship of the highest quality. This will be a great opportunity to see these esteemed members of the UK jazz scene up-close, performing together for us in the intimate space of the Olive Bar.

Mike Walker is a jazz guitarist, improviser, composer and educator. Described as one of the most powerful jazz guitarists in Europe, Mike is noted for his creativity in a number of musical settings and within a broad spectrum of jazz. His inspirational playing and dynamic musicality has seen him in demand since the 1980s. He has collaborated with and operated as a side man for the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Julian Arguelles, Nikki Iles, George Russell and Norma Winstone. Richard Iles is a jazz trumpeter, composer and educator based in the North West. After leaving the Leeds College of Music in 1980 Richard became a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra performing with Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, and Bill Frisell as well as being a member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra working with John Scofield and Gary Burton amongst others. He is principal lecturer in jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and teaches at Chethams School of Music and Salford University.

Les Chisnall is a jazz pianist and has worked with some of the world’s finest jazz musicians, including Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Mike Walker and Ian Bellamy to name but a few. As a composer Les has written for orchestra, piano, organ and choir. Parallel to his playing career Les teaches at Chethams School of Music and LIPA and gives masterclasses at RNCM.

Gregson Gig Series #11: Jack Pearce Quintet coming 23rd February

 

The Jack Pearce Quintet showcases Jack’s original compositions that pay homage to jazz traditions while injecting a fresh, inventive spirit. A band of Leeds Conservatoire Alumni, the Quintet focuses on a fusion of melodic and technical excellence.

Drawing influence from Post-bop and 90s world fusion, the original compositions have a uniquely open and interactive approach. The bands strength is particularly apparent in a live setting where countless hours have been dedicated to every facet of the music, then refined on the stage, culminating in an exciting musical experience.

Strong rhythms underpin vibrant, playful melodies creating a fusion complimentary to both traditional and modern jazz.

Trouble Everyday post-gig post

 

 

We spent a very happy evening in the world of “Trouble Everyday”, giving us a mixture of original compositions, traditional blues and surprising covers which amounted to a thoroughly entertaining gig. Covering a range of subjects, Chris's songwriting is compelling, from the political "I Don't Want to be a Nuisance" to the environmental "Go Plant Me A Tree" and the moving "If I Try", his skilful weaving of stories and perspectives with witty, sensitive lyrics proved captivating. Keith's guitar added a powerful element, sometimes sweet, sometimes howling and always expressive such as his searing solo on "Dance Monkey". Traditional blues versions allowed both players to display their musicianship, as in their lovely exchanges in "St. Louis' Blues" whilst covers like the Foo Fighters "Monkey Wrench" and "Filthy Gorgeous" by Scissor Sisters just added to the stylish, fun spirit of the gig. The audience left satisfied and smiling - thank you to those who came along to support us, we really appreciate it. News of our next gig coming very soon...

Gregson Gig Series #10: Trouble Everyday

 

 

As you know one of the aims of Lancaster Jazz Scene is to present a wide variety of artists and to create rich experiences for both performer and listener. In this vein, our next gig in the Gregson Gig Series promises something a bit special as we enter the world of "Trouble Everyday".

Trouble Everyday is Chris and Keith, who find themselves in the early 21st Century due to a clerical error on the part of the Ministry of Time Anomalies and Rural Affairs. Having been mistakenly selected for an important mission to prevent an incident that leads to the complete unweaving of the fabric of reality, they found themselves sent back 200 years to our current time, where they are now stuck. In their own time they performed as part of a 300 Year Songbook Cryo Show, with Chris on keyboard and vocals and Keith on guitar. Having no idea how to complete their mission, they now bring this show back for us, featuring songs from the early 20th Century and way beyond. There will be crooning, filthy blues, very new songs and plenty of belting guitar solos.

Chris Bridges is a musician and a teacher who is passionate about making all kinds of music accessible to everyone.  He graduated as a trombonist from the RNCM in 1990 and since then has become a part of the North West Jazz scene, enjoying playing in a range of styles and with all kinds of bands.  Recently he has been playing regularly with Henry Botham‘s Nightcreatures, a very funky New Orleans style group, and with Manchester’s finest ska collective, Baked A La Ska. His own projects have included several pieces written for the Manchester Jazz Festival, the String and Bone duo and the Cusp Quartet.

Keith Phillips is a jazz guitarist and educator. His work in a variety of styles has included live performance, radio and television appearances and recording engagements. His quartet Cusp has played at The Symphony Hall Cafe Bar in Birmingham,The Cluny in Newcastle, Zeffirelli's in Ambleside, Parr St Studios in Liverpool, Matt & Phred's in Manchester, and at the Manchester Jazz Festival and were also featured on the BBC Radio 3 programme Jazz on 3.  He has played as guest guitarist with Get the Blessing at Band on the Wall in Manchester, Marsden Jazz Festival, Liverpool Jazz Festival and on gigs in Sheffield and Clitheroe.
