It was great to have the Jack Pearce Quintet back with us at the
Olive Bar on Sunday. Reaching the conclusion of their recent tour, the
band delivered a confident, assured performance with their usual warmth
and appeal. The set consisted mainly of original compositions, many from
the group's engaging "Church Lane" album. From the beautiful swells and
falls of "Ferrara" to the colourful runs, stabs and bluesy solos in
"Remembrance" the musicians were effortlessly in sync.
Herby
Hancock's "Scarborough Fair" and the crackling swing of "Wiggy" were
highly entertaining but it was in the ballads that the band excelled...
The seductive "Salt Path", with its steady sensitive drums and inventive
piano, and the tender saxophone in "Green Eyes" were captivating.
"Fellowship"
had the feel of a classic and an apt title for this group of likeable
and talented musicians. We were thrilled to be the beneficiary of their
hard work and dedication and look forward to seeing them again next time
around.
